WildernessPunk:  The Binary Bell Curve

Okay, before I piss off half my readers, because I don’t want to get two of you angry, let me just say I have no problem with the common definition of being non-binary, which is not identifying as a particular gender. I also understand people need to find words to define what they think they’ve invented. The point of this article is to expand on what are the multiple aspects of binary influences on the lives of humans.

Let’s do a rundown of the Binary nature of our existence as humans.

Some Binary Aspects of our Reality

  • Male/Female
  • Night/Day
  • Hot/Cold
  • Fire/Water
  • Earth/Air
  • Life/Death
  • Good/Evil
  • Law/Chaos
  • Black/White
  • Up/Down
  • North/South
  • East/West
  • Left/Right
  • Plant/Animal
  • Summer/Winter
  • Fall/Spring
  • Jungle/Desert
  • Carnivore/Herbivore

There are more things which could be added to the list, but many are more subtle. Where does the line begin and end with concepts such as young and old, or kind and cruel? Liberal and Conservative would have many different meanings between individuals.

This list could go on and on but I stopped to make things simpler. Again, I have no issue with somebody claiming they are non-binary in the common usage of the word as understood today, but it should perhaps come with a caveat. If a person is non-binary in a gender-oriented manner they could say 4% non-binary. My wife works both during the day and at night, so she is Night/Day non-binary. If a person is more neutral about life and is non-binary in regards to Good/Evil and Law/Chaos, are they more non-binary than a person who considers themselves gender fluid but has a strict morality? By definition I would have to say yes.

I guess my point is there is a whole big world out there and much of reality is, at least to our human way of thinking, binary. Being in the middle on these building blocks of our understanding of reality is fine with me. Hells and Bells, I like fire and water. Since I’m Chaotic Neutral I guess one could say I have a non-binary morality, since I tend to make up my own mind about what is right and wrong and don’t march down party lines, for example.

So go ahead and keep calling yourself non-binary, I have no issue with it, but if you say it to me, I’m going to ask you in regards to which of the binary aspects of existence and not assume one of dozens of variables is the one you are discussing.
